Drawing the Stitch is an exhibition of recent works by Goan artist, Liesl Cotta De Souza, at Cymroza Art Gallery from 27 March – 10 April 2015, to be inaugurated by Ms Hanwantbir Kaur Sahney of NRB Industrial Bearings Ltd.
Liesl executes her works in a medium that is unique though it has been a preoccupation for women through the ages. She has a fascination to explore the use of thread and appliqué on printed fabrics; and while maintaining drawing as an integral part of her work she uses the process of stitching with thread on fabric to create a pictorial surface.
She attempts to present the visual delights of life through the feminine form. The underlying layers of thread and fabric express her interpretation of the mundane world and the urban mundaneness we dwell in.
The vastness of the task of building up an area with stitches, is a process that fascinates the artist. Indeed there is no doubt that Liesl’s artistic achievement in stitched paintings equals or surpasses much that is applauded as fine art. It is ironic that she has succeeded in simply adding to the riches of an alternative expression to her pursuit.
For this exhibition, Cymroza Art Gallery associated with TurmericEarth as the Venue and Project partner.
